Practical Training Materials for Nursing Education

Practical and advanced training for healthcare professionals

The XUND Education Center for Health in Central Switzerland offers programs in nursing (HF), biomedical laboratory science (HF), and postgraduate studies in anesthesia, intensive care, and emergency nursing, as well as intercompany courses for FaGe, AGS, and more at its Lucerne and Alpnach locations.

Training and continuous education of healthcare professionals is essential to combat the shortage of skilled staff in the healthcare sector. XUND offers a broad range of programs that combine theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience. The goal is to prepare students and trainees as effectively as possible for real-life healthcare settings.

Each year, intercompany courses (üK) for health care assistants and practical training sessions (LTT) for nursing students are held at XUND. During these sessions, participants practice and refine their clinical skills under professional supervision. The instructors are experienced professionals from hospitals, nursing homes, or home care services, bringing a wealth of expertise and practical experience.

Part of the üK / LTT training focuses on the safe handling and distribution of medications. Previously, two classrooms were equipped with permanently installed medication cabinets. Normally, two trainees work on an assignment together, following the four-eyes principle. Other students had to simulate medication preparation using loose materials, which, according to Mr. Roberto Emmenegger, responsible for practical training, was not ideal. The setup lacked real-life relevance, and materials were inconveniently stored in boxes, making it cumbersome for instructors.

To address this, Mr. Emmenegger advocated for the acquisition of dedicated medication trolleys. Six trolleys were equipped with a defined basic setup to allow trainees to realistically simulate medication handling. These mobile trolleys give XUND the flexibility to conduct training sessions in any room, independent of location. Another advantage is that internal logistics staff check and restock the trolleys before and after each use. This enables trainees to practice medication preparation under conditions that closely reflect real-world situations.

Conclusion: Mr. Emmenegger is satisfied with the solution. The medication trolleys help instructors simulate realistic scenarios for medication handling and allow trainees to gain valuable hands-on experience.
